GPDD Collaboration with MERCOSUR and Argentine Government

Argentina, March 22-27, 2010

To facilitate the crystallization of the Government Network in South America, built on an ongoing collaboration around Disability and Development within the MERCOSUR, the GPDD participated in a series of capacity building events in Argentina from March 22nd to March 27th, 2010. This activity was realized in partnership with several GPDD Members: the Government of Finland, the UN Secretariat for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Leonard Cheshire International.

 

Meeting at the Inter-American Development Bank on “Reconstruction in Haiti and Innovative Universal Design”

Washington DC, United States, March 19, 2010

The GPDD and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) co-organized a meeting on “Reconstruction in Haiti and Innovative Universal Design” on March 19 at the IDB in Washington DC. On that occasion a draft of the First Chapter of the Toolkit on Inclusive Reconstruction was presented to the audience, which was mainly composed of architects working for the IDB. Among other things, the IDB is also in charge of housing reconstruction in Haiti; therefore the meeting presented a great occasion to foster knowledge of and commitment to accessible reconstruction.

 

Experts’ meeting on indicators for inclusive monitoring of poverty reduction and development programs in Mozambique

Mozambique, Maputo - March 4, 2010

The GPDD and the World Bank's Disability and Development Team organized a technical consultation meeting for Mozambique's National Institute of Statistics to identify indicators to evaluate disability inclusion/mainstreaming in poverty reduction and development programs, especially those seeking to achieve the Millennium Development Goals [link to MDGs page]. The meeting included representatives from the INE and academia in Mozambique as well as experts from the World Bank, the United Nations Statistics Division, the Washington Group on Disability Statistics, SINTEF, the Inter-American Institute on Disability and Inclusive Development, and the Forum of Mozambican Associations of Disabled People.

 

Regional Seminar on Accessibility of the Environment, Universal Design, Tourism, and Development

Maputo, Mozambique, March 1-3, 2010

The GPDD and the World Bank’s Disability and Development Team, in partnership with Handicap International Mozambique, successfully hosted a Regional Seminar on Accessibility of the Environment, Universal Design, Tourism, and Development in Maputo, Mozambique to demonstrate how accessibility and universal design in tourism can significantly contribute to inclusive development while offering significant benefits to people with disabilities in their daily lives due to the changes in infrastructure and environmental resources. Attendees came from over 19 countries, primarily from countries in Southern Africa and African Lusophone countries.

 

Inclusive Poverty Reduction Strategy Planning Workshop - Focusing in the Process of PARPA II and Persons with Disabilities

Maputo, Mozambique, February 22-27, 2010

The Inclusive Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) Planning Workshop was a five day capacity building workshop for DPOs and CSOs from around Mozambique to promote knowledge on current poverty reduction strategies in Mozambique, and provide training on identifying entry points for mainstreaming and building alliances with government and international cooperation stakeholders to include disability as a cross-cutting issue in all poverty reduction strategies and development practices. The workshop was organized and hosted by the Global Partnership for Disability and Development (GPDD), with the support of the World Bank’s Disability and Development Team and in partnership with the Inter-American Institute on Disability and Inclusive Development (IIDI), Handicap International Mozambique (HI MOZ) and the Mozambican Forum of Disabled People’s Organizations (FAMOD), in Maputo from 22-26 of February, 2010.
